Märchen der Brüder Grimm, Jacob ve Wilhelm Grimm’in 19. yüzyılın başlarında Almanya’nın çeşitli bölgelerinde yürüttükleri sözlü folklor derlemelerinin ürünü olan, Avrupa masal geleneğinin en etkili ve en kapsamlı koleksiyonlarından biridir. Eser, yalnızca masalların metinleştirilmesi değil, aynı zamanda dönemin romantik milliyetçiliği içinde halk kültürünün kökenlerini keşfetme çabasının da bir sonucudur. Grimm Kardeşler, derlemelerinde Almanca konuşulan bölgelerdeki anlatıların özgün karakterlerini korumaya çalışmış; masalların dilsel, tematik ve yapısal özelliklerini sistematik şekilde düzenleyerek halk anlatılarının bilimsel olarak incelenmesine önemli katkı sağlamıştır. Koleksiyon, Kırmızı Başlıklı Kız, Hansel ve Gretel, Pamuk Prenses, Külkedisi, Rapunzel gibi bugün dünya kültürünün parçası hâline gelmiş anlatıların yanı sıra daha az bilinen fakat sözlü geleneğin zenginliğini gösteren pek çok masalı içerir. Masallar; iyilik-kötülük çatışması, sınavlardan geçme, dönüşüm, büyülü nesneler, doğaüstü yardımcılar ve kader motifleri gibi evrensel folklorik temalar etrafında şekillenir. Bu temalar, Propp’un işlev odaklı çözümlemelerinde ve daha sonraki yapısalcı masal araştırmalarında temel veriler hâline gelmiştir. Grimm Kardeşler’in çalışması, masalların yalnızca çocuk edebiyatı için değil, aynı zamanda kültürel tarih, dilbilim, antropoloji ve mitoloji açısından da önemli bir kaynak olduğunu ortaya koyar. Masallarda yer alan sosyal roller, aile ilişkileri, toplumsal normlar, cinsiyet kodları ve ahlaki öğretiler, dönemin kırsal yaşamının zihniyet dünyasını anlamaya imkân tanır. Abstract:
The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm is one of the most influential and comprehensive collections of European fairy tales, the product of the oral folklore compilations conducted by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in various regions of Germany in the early 19th century. The work is not only a transcription of fairy tales, but also the result of an effort to discover the origins of folk culture within the romantic nationalism of the period. In their collection, the Brothers Grimm sought to preserve the original character of the narratives from German-speaking regions; by systematically organizing the linguistic, thematic, and structural features of the fairy tales, they made a significant contribution to the scientific study of folk narratives. The collection includes many tales that are now part of world culture, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Cinderella, and Rapunzel, as well as many lesser-known tales that demonstrate the richness of the oral tradition. Fairy tales are shaped around universal folkloric themes such as the conflict between good and evil, trials, transformation, magical objects, supernatural helpers, and fate. These themes became fundamental data in Propp’s function-oriented analyses and subsequent structuralist fairy tale studies. The Brothers Grimm’s work reveals that fairy tales are an important source not only for children’s literature but also for cultural history, linguistics, anthropology, and mythology. The social roles, family relationships, social norms, gender codes, and moral teachings found in fairy tales provide insight into the mindset of rural life at the time. Furthermore, the changes that fairy tales underwent between different editions offer valuable clues about how folkloric texts were adapted and reshaped over time. In these respects, Märchen der Brüder Grimm remains an enduring treasure trove of folklore, serving as a fundamental reference for both scientific research and world literature.
