Öz:
Joachim Wach’ın Sociology of Religion (Din Sosyolojisi, 1944) adlı eseri, dinin sosyolojik olarak incelenmesini bağımsız bir bilimsel disiplin haline getiren öncü bir çalışmadır. Wach, dini deneyim ile toplumsal yapılar arasındaki dinamik etkileşimi sistematik bir biçimde ele alarak dinin dışa vurumlarını teorik (doktrin), pratik (ibadet) ve sosyolojik (cemaat) boyutlarda kategorize eder. Dini grupların nasıl oluştuğunu, mezheplerden kurumsallaşmış kiliselere dönüşümünü, toplumsal tabakalaşma ve otorite üzerindeki etkilerini inceler. Tarihsel ve antropolojik verileri sosyolojiyle sentezleyen Wach, dinin toplumsal çevreden etkilendiği kadar, toplumsal gerçekliği dönüştürme gücüne sahip özerk bir yapı olduğunu savunur.
Abstract:
Joachim Wach’s Sociology of Religion (1944) is a seminal work that established the sociological study of religion as an independent, scientific discipline. Wach systematically examines the dynamic interplay between religious experience and social structures, categorizing the expressions of religion into theoretical (doctrine), practical (worship), and sociological (community) dimensions. He explores how religious groups form, evolve from sects into established churches, and influence social stratification, leadership, and authority. By synthesizing historical, anthropological, and sociological data, Wach demonstrates that while religion is profoundly shaped by its cultural environment, it also acts as an autonomous force capable of transforming social reality.
