Abstract:
Serge Moscovici’s landmark 1961 study La Psychanalyse, son image et son public explores how technical scientific knowledge transforms into everyday common sense within a society. By examining the reception of psychoanalysis in post-war France across various social groups and media, Moscovici introduced the theory of “social representations.” He demonstrates how complex psychological concepts—such as the unconscious or repression—are filtered, simplified, and repurposed to fit pre-existing cultural beliefs and values. The text details the mechanisms of anchoring and objectification, showing how abstract ideas become concrete realities in popular discourse. Ultimately, the work redefined social psychology by highlighting how communication shapes shared social knowledge.
