Andrew Lang’in Custom and Myth adlı eseri, 19. yüzyıl folklor ve mitoloji araştırmalarının kurucu nitelikteki çalışmalarından biri olarak, insan toplumlarında görülen gelenekler, ritüeller ve mitlerin kökenlerini karşılaştırmalı bir antropolojik bakışla ele alır. Lang, farklı kültürlerdeki anlatılar, inanç sistemleri ve sembolik uygulamalar arasında yapısal benzerlikler bulunduğunu öne sürerek, mitlerin yalnızca estetik ya da hayal ürünü metinler değil, insan zihninin evrensel işleyişine dair ipuçları taşıyan kültürel ürünler olduğunu savunur. Bu bağlamda eser, erken antropolojinin “yeniden kurma” ve “evrimci açıklama” girişimlerinin örneklerinden biri sayılır. Custom and Myth, özellikle kahraman doğumu motifleri, yaratılış anlatıları, hayvan masalları, tabular, totemizm kalıntıları ve büyüsel düşünce gibi temalar üzerinde yoğunlaşır. Abstract:
Andrew Lang’s work, Customs and Myths, is one of the seminal studies in 19th-century folklore and mythology research, examining the origins of traditions, rituals, and myths observed in human societies through a comparative anthropological lens. Lang argues that there are structural similarities between narratives, belief systems, and symbolic practices in different cultures, maintaining that myths are not merely aesthetic or imaginary texts but cultural products that offer clues about the universal workings of the human mind. In this context, the work is considered one of the examples of early anthropology’s attempts at “reconstruction” and “evolutionary explanation.” Custom and Myth focuses particularly on themes such as hero birth motifs, creation narratives, animal tales, taboos, remnants of totemism, and magical thinking. Lang interprets these themes not merely as folkloric relics but as indicators of the mental structure and cultural continuity of human societies. The author establishes a broad cultural comparative framework extending from classical Greek myths to Native American, Polynesian, African, and Near Eastern narratives, thereby discussing the circulation, adaptations, and functional transformations of myths and traditions across societies. A key aspect of Lang’s approach is his emphasis on the inseparable unity of myth and ritual.
