Paul Monroe’nun bu temel nitelikteki eseri, antik çağlardan 20. yüzyılın başlarına kadar eğitim düşüncelerinin, uygulamalarının ve kurumlarının kapsamlı bir tarihsel incelemesini sunmaktadır. Monroe, eğitimin gelişimini evrimsel evrelere ayırarak ilkil geleneklerden antik Yunan ve Roma ideallerine, ortaçağ skolastisizminden Rönesans hümanizmasına ve modern bilimsel pedagojiye kadar uzanan süreci ele alır. Kitap, değişen kültürel, dini ve siyasi felsefelerin zaman içinde eğitim hedeflerini nasıl yeniden şekillendirdiğini inceler.
