Eikenberry, genç öğrencilere birbirinden kopuk ve uzmanlaşmış bilim disiplinlerinin öğretilmesine karşı çıkarak; bunun yerine günlük olgulara ve öğrencilerin doğal merakına dayanan bütünleşik bir yaklaşım önerir. Kitap; bilimsel okuryazarlığı ve problem çözme becerilerini geliştirmek amacıyla tasarlanan ders organizasyonunu, laboratuvar uygulamalarını, ders kitabı seçimini ve sınıf içi deney tekniklerini inceler.
