Do you know... Twenty-two years ago, I looked around and saw that the world had buried my soul in a mire of ugliness and disappointment, drowning it in swamp water. I retreated to a dark corner of my soul and stayed there for months; I slowly drained the silence and life from it, as if bleeding them out. I closed my eyes and thought the end had come for a life that had only just begun. But as they say, \u201cTrials are a great teacher,\u201d even if this teacher exacts a heavy price for its lessons. I don\u2019t know what kind of life seeped into the very roots of that parched soul. A light shone upon me in the pitch-black darkness of my spiritual world... So I relied on myself and walked, gazing at that light without even looking back. I plunged into difficulties, heading toward an uncertain idea; philosophically, it was an idea akin to this, held with a cautious awareness: Reading is an alternative to life... A revolution against the misery of the mud\u2014that is what I call the leap of the soul at the great turning points in the life of a developing personality. On the day my soul was left completely bare, I spat that swamp water in the world\u2019s face and set about covering myself with leaves of knowledge. I made my way to the libraries; I didn\u2019t know most of the things on the shelves, and I was writhing in the agony of ignorance. I still remember the bewilderment I felt\u2014and the tears that followed\u2014when I stood before a strange title on the shelf one day and asked, \u201cWhat is this? What does it mean?\u201d There was no one to teach me. I\u2019m not claiming that this book is as dangerous as those great literary and intellectual works that \u201cnarrow the mind, lift a person up and bring them back down, stir the hidden sources of power, strike the very core of emotion, and give the reader the feeling of having been transformed into something other than what they once were.\u201d No\u2026 But I do believe they are not entirely devoid of the shadows cast by Dostoevsky\u2019s profound words: \u201cThe word is a great deed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
