Abstract:<\/strong>
Culture is one of the most fundamental building blocks enabling a nation to preserve its collective identity and historical continuity. Camel herding practices and traditional camel wrestling, which have left a deep imprint on the socioeconomic and sociocultural life of Turkish society over the centuries, are among the tangible and intangible manifestations of this rich heritage. In this context, the tradition of camel herding constitutes one of the significant fields in folklore studies that awaits in-depth research. In this study, the traces, rituals, and cultural practices of camel herding in the Kumluca district of Antalya province\u2014one of the focal points in southwestern Turkey where this traditional culture is dynamically kept alive\u2014have been examined using a monographic approach.
Structured with methodological rigor, this study consists of six main sections:
Chapter One: In this introductory section, the introduction, research problem, purpose, significance, methodology, scope, population, sample, and limitations are outlined; subsequently, existing academic studies (books, articles, conference papers, and theses) addressing camel herding culture and camel wrestling in the literature are subjected to a chronological and critical evaluation.
Chapter Two: In this chapter, to clarify the general outline of the research area, elements of general human geography and folk culture\u2014such as the geographical structure, population, agricultural and socioeconomic activities, and educational status of the Kumluca district\u2014are presented using a descriptive approach.
Chapter Three: The historical development of camel herding culture is examined from a theoretical perspective; the tradition\u2019s place and significance within general Turkish history, its current status in Turkey, and its role in the nomadic (Y\u00f6r\u00fck) culture are analyzed.
Chapter Four: Focusing on camel herding practices and material cultural elements specific to Kumluca, this chapter addresses practical applications such as the feeding habits of camels, their shelter areas (sheds), camel equipment (saddles, ornaments), and traditional and modern folk medicine\/healthcare practices.
Chapter Five: In this chapter, which forms the experimental core of the study, the structural preparation processes carried out prior to traditional camel wrestling events in Kumluca, the rituals during the wrestling matches, daylak wrestling, the institution of the cazg\u0131r (announcer), and folk beliefs centered around camels are examined in depth.
Chapter Six: In the final chapter of the study, the focus is on works of Turkish folk literature that have emerged around camel-herding culture; prayers (alk\u0131\u015flar), curses (karg\u0131\u015flar), folk verses, rhymes, riddles, and the local lexicon (terminology) specific to camel-herding culture\u2014all collected from local residents during fieldwork\u2014were analyzed and documented using folklore methodology.
In the Conclusions and Recommendations section, all findings obtained as a result of field research and theoretical analyses were synthesized, and solutions aimed at ensuring the sustainability of camel-herding culture were proposed. At the end of the study, a Bibliography, a List of Informants, and an Index of Illustrations were included to demonstrate the study\u2019s empirical foundations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
