Victor Francis Calverton\u2019s The Passing of the Gods<\/em> (1934) is a prominent Marxist sociological study of religion. Calverton applies historical materialism to analyze the decline of religious influence in modern society, arguing that religious beliefs, dogmas, and institutions are structural reflections of underlying class interests and economic conditions. The text examines how dominant social classes historically used religion as a tool of social control to maintain power and consolidate economic hegemony.
