Beginning with classical Greek and Roman education, he proceeds through medieval scholasticism, Renaissance humanism, and Enlightenment rationalism, culminating in modern educational reformers. The work situates pedagogy within broader intellectual, religious, and social contexts, emphasizing the relationship between educational theory and institutional practice.
