Kitap, orkestra enstrümanlarını dört temel aileye ayırır: yaylılar, tahta üflemeliler, bakır üflemeliler ve vurmalı çalgılar. Her bir enstrümanın nasıl yapıldığını, sesin nasıl üretildiğini ve bireysel tınıların kolektif uyuma nasıl katkı sağladığını ayrıntılarıyla ele alır. Teknik açıklamaların yanı sıra çalışma, Erken Barok topluluklarından 19. ve 20. yüzyılın büyük orkestra düzenlerine kadar orkestranın tarihsel gelişiminin izini sürer.
