The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm is one of the most influential and comprehensive collections of European fairy tales, the product of the oral folklore compilations conducted by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in various regions of Germany in the early 19th century. The work is not only a transcription of fairy tales, but also the result of an effort to discover the origins of folk culture within the romantic nationalism of the period. In their collection, the Brothers Grimm sought to preserve the original character of the narratives from German-speaking regions; by systematically organizing the linguistic, thematic, and structural features of the fairy tales, they made a significant contribution to the scientific study of folk narratives. The collection includes many tales that are now part of world culture, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Cinderella, and Rapunzel, as well as many lesser-known tales that demonstrate the richness of the oral tradition.
