Abstract:
Jewish Magic and Superstition is Joshua Trachtenberg's classic work examining magic, superstition, and occult practices in medieval Jewish communities within a historical and cultural framework. Trachtenberg systematically addresses the broad and often overlooked area between the normative-theological structure of Jewish religious thought and the practical reality of popular beliefs. The work aims to show that practices such as folk magic, demonology, protective rituals, talismans, amulets, and spirit summoning are intertwined not only with belief systems but also with social structure, psychology, and daily life practices. According to Trachtenberg, the Jewish tradition of magic was largely shaped by interaction with surrounding cultures—particularly those of Babylon, Persia, Hellenistic Greece, and medieval Europe. The author interprets this cultural exchange as a body of beliefs that, while not entirely detached from the fundamental concepts of Jewish theology, was flexible and reinterpreted in line with popular needs. Protective practices developed against malevolent entities (dybbuk, lilith, etc.), the evil eye, and invisible dangers are evaluated as symbolic behaviors reflecting the community's methods of coping with fear, illness, death, and uncertainty. The work also discusses in detail the tension between magic and halachic (religious law) order. How prohibitions, areas of tolerance, and boundaries are drawn; the attitudes of rabbis towards popular beliefs; the suppression or sometimes disregard of popular magical practices by rabbinical authorities; these are all examined through this dynamic relationship. Trachtenberg uses a wide range of data in his source analysis, from Hebrew and Aramaic magic texts to medieval manuscripts, from responsa literature to folk narratives. Overall, Jewish Magic and Superstition is a fundamental work for religious anthropology and folklore studies, scientifically revealing the historical continuity of magic and popular beliefs in Jewish culture, their interaction with theological frameworks, and their functions within social life.
