Abstract:
William Pierson Merrill’s thoughtful collection of essays explores the complex intersection between religious faith, human perception, and late 19th-century agnostic thought. Merrill contends that agnosticism should not be viewed merely as an enemy of religion, but as a healthy challenge that forces theology to abandon rigid dogmatism and intellectual pride. By contrasting the limits of human knowledge ("sight") with the intuitive trust of faith, the book advocates for a balanced, open-minded Christian theology. Merrill argues that true faith thrives not on absolute intellectual certainty, but on a lived personal experience of the divine that integrates scientific honesty with spiritual conviction.
