Abstract:
George F. Stout’s Analytic Psychology (1896) is a foundational two-volume work in British empirical psychology that examines the internal architecture and dynamics of consciousness. Rejecting pure associationism, Stout argues that mental activity cannot be reduced to passive sequences of ideas. Instead, he introduces a functional framework centered on apperception, noetic synthesis, and conation—the active, goal-directed striving of the mind. Stout analyzes cognitive processes, sensory presentation, and emotional states to explain how discrete mental elements are organized into unified experience. By bridging 19th-century mental philosophy with systematic psychological analysis, the text significantly influenced early cognitive psychology and the development of functionalism.
