<p><strong>Öz:</strong><br>James William Norman’ın bu tarihsel karşılaştırmalı çalışması, 20. yüzyılın başlarında İngiltere ve Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’ndeki ortaöğretim sistemlerinde meydana gelen yapısal, felsefi ve pedagojik dönüşümleri incelemektedir. Kitap, Birinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında daha geniş kitlelere açılmaya başlayan İngiliz geleneksel ve seçkinci eğitim anlayışını, Amerika'nın daha eşitlikçi ve kapsayıcı lise modeliyle karşılaştırır. Norman; müfredatın demokratikleşmesi, mesleki eğitime karşı klasik eğitim, eğitim yönetimi ve bireysel yetenekler ile toplumsal ihtiyaçlar arasındaki denge gibi temel konuları ele alır. Eser, her iki ülkenin de kendi sosyoekonomik yapısı doğrultusunda ortaöğretimi modernleştirmesini analiz eder.<br><strong>Abstract:</strong><br>James William Norman’s historical comparative study examines the structural, philosophical, and pedagogical shifts in secondary education across England and the United States during the early 20th century. The book contrasts the traditional, elite-oriented English framework—increasingly moving toward broader social access after World War I—with the more egalitarian, comprehensive American high school model. Norman explores key topics such as curriculum democratization, vocational versus classical instruction, educational governance, and the balance between individual student needs and national civic efficiency. Ultimately, the text illustrates how both nations strove to modernize secondary schooling to support democratic ideals while navigating distinct socioeconomic structures and traditions.</p>
